Resolution in Support of the Rule of Law Project

Concerned Citizens of Washington County

Publicly Stating Our Grievances

250 years ago, the American colonies voiced resistance to British policies by publicly stating their grievances through resolutions debated and passed in town meetings. Those town resolutions played a vital role in fostering intercolonial communication and coordinating resistance to Mad King George III.

Now it is our time to act.

We are a group of residents of Washington County, Oregon, who are alarmed by what the Trump Administration is doing to undermine our democracy. We are a small group. We are ordinary people. We are very far from the seats of power, but we are not powerless.

We believe that, if we can articulate our concerns, and join with like-minded people around the country, our voices will swell to a chorus that demands to be heard. As we are faced with blatant attempts to force compliance through intimidation and coercion, we believe the most effective form of resistance is standing together and openly stating our objections.

The plan is to get every level of our government (town, city, county, state) on record condemning Trump’s abandonment of the Constitutional order. It is up to us to force a serious debate at the grassroots level, creating local ownership of critical issues, and bringing back sanity to our government.

As residents of Washington County, we will start by bringing a proposed resolution to our Board of County Commissioners urging members to debate and adopt the resolution affirming Washington County’s commitment to the rule of law
